Burp!

Day 32: Hannah was bawling last night again after feeds. Her diapers were OK, but the burping had been uneven – lots of small burps but nothing like the huge “BUUUURRRPPPP” we were keeping our fingers crossed for. Ling tried saya-ing her for quite a bit but Hannah wouldn’t be pacified. Mum called just to see how things were just when Hannah was crying, and she remarked how loud Hannah sounded even from the phone!

That was then I stumbled on a trick, and out of desperation – while carrying her I started singing to her. And wow – that worked very well! Hannah’s eyes went wide-open, looked straight into mine, and seemed enraptured. I did whichever hymns I could think off, and when I was out of repertoire, did carols next.

It took 30 minutes of humming and singing before Hannah was lulled into bed, at which point I’d already exhausted all the songs I could think of, including repeats too.

But it was a huge relief, and Hannah slept soundly for the next 4.5 hrs before waking up again at 3 am-ish for another feed.

Now, if only the trick continues to be effective in the coming days. I sure hope she doesn’t demand increasingly longer song recitals next time LOL.

  1. U shd just sing 1 song over & over again. *haha* I doubt the baby would know the difference at this point! Even twinkle twinkle little star is fine!

  2. i have a christian baby CD that u can borrow =) or next time u can record your singing then play over and over again LOL

  3. Way to go, Yang!

I sang to both your nephews when they were cranky little babies and the familiar voice and repetitive rhythm helped to soothe them down.

Unlike you, I only had 1 song in mind at that time and repeated all the way. :-)

  4. It could also be that baby instinctively recognises Daddy’s voice and authority and feels secure- there have been some instances like these too, when Adriel managed to calm the kids during infancy, when even I could not.
