Naga-machi is the third district we listed in Kanazawa to check-out. Like the other two from yesterday – Higashi Chaya and Kazue-machi Chaya – this area comprises old traditional and well-preserved houses, and in this case residences of Samurai who were in the employ of Kanazawa Castle. The vibe here is similar to that of Kazue-machi Chaya and nothing like the crowded and touristy Higashi Chaya: we saw only the occasional visitor, and the couple of locals we saw walking the district seemed to be just going about their daily business or as a short-cut to get to somewhere else.
The best find in this district was actually Aashirwad below, an Indian Nepali restaurant that dished out some fabulous curries and naans. We didn’t actually list this place down in our initial planning. Only that after we’d walked Naga-machi, it was lunch time and – in the chilly cold of winter – we wanted ramen. The wife Googled ‘best food nearby’, and this was the first hit, and just down the street from where we were. Indian food is good too!
So, despite the itinerary including four places of visitation, we finished the day fairly early and returned to our hotel in the early afternoon to vegetate. Day 09 will be a pretty heavy day at Fukui, and it’d be snowing again. Continued in the next post!
