The Minton: Ideas and Renovation – 29 – Day 20

As Ling tells it, the electrician team had such a difficult time mounting our LED downlights yesterday that one of the two walked out in sheer frustration for a break. Apparently, the securing clip mechanisms in our downlights are ‘unique’ in design, that either our electricians were unfamiliar with how they work, or that the clips were not well-designed to begin with. In any case, after a number of phone-calls yesterday evening and this morning between our designer, his electricians and us, it turned out that the electricians did manage to secure all our downlights and – thankfully – they should not be dropping down on our heads any time soon. That said, if they for any reason need to be removed, we’ll experience a lot of difficulty putting them back since the securing clips do not seem easily re-usable. We figured this is something we’d live with, since we don’t see ourselves ever removing those downlights – until they need replacement altogether.

We met with one of the two electricians – as Ling muses after yesterday’s observations, the more ‘patient’ fellow of the two – onsite this afternoon after discovering some minor errors in the fixture installations.

Firstly, the animals are the wrong way round, and Hannah would flip if she saw Peter’s bed was gonna get the giraffe while she got the monkey. OK, that sounded odd, but Hannah at the light shop where we purchased these Philips Kids’ Space lights had said she liked the giraffe a lot more than the monkey LOL.

Secondly, the switches controlling the lights in our work room had not been correctly done. Normally this would be an easy fix, but because of how they had been previously wired before the false ceiling went up, this would mean the electricians would need to dismount the already tricky-to-mount downlights. Oh joy. This means we’ll have to make a return trip back to the warehouse and get more of the securing clips. Likewise, we requested for corrections to the switches for our Master Bedroom; the tracklight should be controlled separately from the downlights.

Ling was a little annoyed, since she did make very clear on Day 18 where the lights should be and how they should be controlled. Oh well; relatively minor annoyances still – and at least they were noted early so that corrections could be made. Lesson here: explain clearly, and check your light configurations!

From what the electrician explained too; the remaining electrical fixtures – basically cove lights, dining lights and the fan in the living hall, alongside ceiling lights in the balcony and home shelter, and wall-lights in our Master Bedroom – will be done sporadically in the coming days. No rush, since our carpentry will only be coming after next week. We’ll see, and report back here if we note any more progress.:)

  1. Hi.. …are your electricians reliable and pricing reasonable. Can recommend.
    Tks.

  2. Hey there; our two general electricians were alright, but we don’t have their direct contact points. They were subcons appointed by our Interior Designer.
