Visiting Obamaland

Singapore in itself isn’t very exciting outside eating and shopping, so many of us simply make use of our convenient location to travel. Singaporeans are a pretty lucky lot when it comes to traveling around the world. We’re situated right smack in a spot where major lines of transportation intersect, and there’re exciting places to go to every direction you fly. North, there’s Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo. South, there’s Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. West, there’s India, the Middle-East, and Europe beyond. East, there’s the Philippines and beyond the big blue, the Americas.

I’m looking forward to the forthcoming trip to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco later this month. For those of us in gaming, the GDC is the biggest event of its type in the industry, and generates not just a lot of excitement for those persons in the interactive entertainment industry, but also consumers i.e. players of the products too.

Unfortunately, since it’s an official faculty trip, there won’t be much time to sink in the sights. I’m needed right back after the five day event. Matt for certain is a little sorry at the missed opportunity: he was ready to fly across half the country to meet-up and we’d check out all the eating places in Chinatown and see if there’re any roti prata joints along the stretch. In fact, Ling even had this idea of me packing a kilogram of bak kwa and local posting it to him when I’m in San Fran LOL. Unfortunately, I would have a lot of explaining to do at customs why I’m bringing in a kilogram of barbequed pork.:)

It doesn’t help either that the Singapore dollar is a little weak against the greenback. Heck, the situation’s completely reversed compared to when Matt visited us in Singapore last June: now’s the best time for him to visit (again), and the worst time for me to go there. Still, I’m checking out to see if there’s anything I can pick up in the States that’s cheaper there than in Singapore. Especially books! :)

  1. A little sorry? You mean I’m really sorry about the turn of events. I had intended to take advantage of your airline carrier’s rather liberal baggage allowance on your return trip home by stuffing myself into one of your suitcases. Now I’ll have to go to the trouble of flying out to Singapore myself in 8 to 16 months’ time. : )

(And given the cool gadgets you’re liable to include in your suitcase, I’d have no doubt been plenty occupied.)
