I enjoy a wide variety of vegetables and corn is one of my favourites. I can still remember my first corn on a cob as a small kid while living in a kampong with houses on stilts and occasional visits by snakes.
Ann, my church’s small group friend, brought some Japanese bi-coloured (white and yellow) corn for our BBQ not too long ago. She had cut the kernels off the cob and wrap them in an aluminium foil for grilling on the charcoals. It took a while to cook it but once it was ready, she applied butter liberally to the corn and mix the two well before serving it. All I remembered then was that I had the best tasting corn in my life! I couldn’t describe it – it left me speechless. Ann called the experience orgasmic. All of us there just wanted another scoop of it if possible.
So yup, I’ve been ga-ga-ing over the Japanese bi-coloured corn sold at our nearby Cold Storage supermarket since then. The only reason which kept me from buying it is the price. For the price of $1.80, you could buy 2 corn on a cob produced in the asia. But to get 2 of those Jap bi-coloured ones, you have to fork out $5.80! These are hybrids yes but hey, haven’t these guys been around since the 60s? Oh well, may be these are grown organically.
I finally succumbed last Sunday – bought 2 Jap bi-coloured corn on cobs. I cooked them with boiling water for 15 minutes (timing is subjected to personal preference) and shredded the kernels into a shallow bowl with a knife (i used a fork to secure one end of the piping, hot corn while shredding it). I added about 1 tbsp of butter and stir to mix evenly. Presto, it’s done!
Mmmmm, very scrumptious healthy snack! While it lacks the smoky taste of the grilled version, it’s still very good. Out of curiosity, I started picking on the white and yellow kernels separately. Oh! What a revelation! The white ones were the tiny sugar bombs exploding in my mouth while the yellow ones released the starchy, corny flavour! Put the two types of kernels together, you get a sensational gastronomic experience! A clever match indeed. :P
wa! you changed your look ah! nice nice! more trendy ^^
interesting revelation about the white n yellow corn… i didn’t know that ^^
Yeah; after losing another 1/3 of the posts here, the WordPress upgrade had to be at least worth it with better themes and plugins.:)
